Hyland & McFarland Each Score 25 as Bentley Shoots Past Saint Rose, 87-69

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) each had 25 points and eight rebounds, and Hyland also handed out seven assists, as Bentley University won for the 11th time in its last 14 games, 87-69 over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Thursday night at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Bentley knocked down a season-high 15 three-pointers, including five by McFarland and four from Hyland, to improve to 12-7 overall and 7-6 NE-10.

After nine lead changes and four ties, Bentley took the lead, appropriately enough, on a triple, this one from the right side by sophomore guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)). That made it 29-26 with 5:07 left in the opening half and ignited a stanza-ending 14-9 spurt that sent Bentley into the break up five, 40-35.

With the spread still at five early in the second, Bentley embarked on an 11-0 run that was fueled by the long ball. Following a foul-line extended jumper by McFarland, junior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) nailed a three from the right wing, Hyland hit one from the other side of the court  and McFarland connected from the top of the key.

That blast made it a 56-40 game with 14:21 to play and the Falcon lead remained in double figures the rest of the night.

After the Golden Knights (5-15, 3-10 NE-10) got within 11 with 4:55 remaining, Bentley locked up the win by blanking the home team over the next four-and-a-half minutes. The Falcons scored nine unanswered during that stretch, including a pair of triples from Hyland.

Both Hyland and McFarland enjoyed outstanding shooting nights and were a major reason why Bentley finished at .552 overall and .441 from outside. Hyland was on target 10 of 15 times, including four of nine from beyond the arc, and McFarland's 9-of-15 included 5-of-9 from downtown.

Bentley also received 11 points, five assists and three steals from senior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA), ten points and three dimes from Furness and a solid effort off the bench from Duke (9 points, 3-4 fg, 2-3 3's).

For Saint Rose, freshmen forwards Jalaun Taylor (Albany, N.Y.) and Sam Eckstrom (Olean, N.Y.) scored nearly as much as the Hyland-McFarland duo, combining for 45 on 18-of-28 shooting. Taylor hit 10 of 15 shots, including three from deep, during a 26-point night, and Eckstrom followed with 19 on 8-of-13 from the floor.

However, unlike McFarland and Hyland, they didn't get as much help from their teammates, who were just 8 of 30 overall and 2 of 12 from three.  Overall, the Golden Knights finished at .448 with just five triples.

Rebounds were slightly in Bentley's favor (33-30) while Saint Rose had only nine turnovers, one fewer than the Falcons, and four more free throws, 12-8.

Bentley will be right back at it on Saturday, taking on Pace University at the Dana Center Saturday at 3:30 pm.
