Strong Shooting From 3 Leads Bentley Past New Haven, 65-56

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), junior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and senior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/ Thornton Academy) each made three of Bentley University's 13 three-pointers as the Falcons completed a season series sweep of the University of New Haven, 65-56 in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at the Dana Center.

Hyland, three of five from outside the arc, led the Falcons with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Furness followed with 13 points and Shaw provided 10, along with four rebounds, off the bench. He knocked down three of four triples.

Bentley, with its eighth win in its last ten games, improved to 11-7 overall and 6-6 in the NE-10. New Haven slipped to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play following its second straight loss.

The Falcons, whose only deficit of the night came at 2-0, used a 7-0 run to break a 17-all tie and take a lead it would never give back. Furness got it going with a three-ball, Hyland scored on a drive to the basket and Hyland made it 24-17 with two free throws.

After the visitors cut it to 24-23, Bentley closed the opening half with a 12-4 blast over the final 4:25. All the Falcon points coming via the long ball with Hyland hitting a pair and both sophomore guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School (N.J.)) and Shaw connecting once. Shaw's buzzer-beater produced the biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes, 36-27, and was the Falcons' eighth three in 12 attempts.

The second half differential hovered between eight and ten most of the time as neither team was able to string more than two baskets together.

Bentley threes helped hold off the Chargers over the final nine minutes. Hyland nailed one from the right wing after New Haven pulled within six, 50-44, with a little under nine to play. Furness connected from the right corner for a 56-46 lead with 7:58 left, junior forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) drained one from the top of the key to make it 60-50 with 4:41 on the clock, and Shaw sank one from the right corner with 2:19 left, putting the Falcons up 11 at 63-52.

The three in doubles were followed by McFarland and junior forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./ Linden HS), with eight and seven points, respectively. McFarland got it done at the defensive end with three blocks and three steals, and Phelps' night also included six rebounds, three assists and a block.

Senior forward Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J.) led New Haven with 15 points and 14 rebounds, but he needed 18 shots (6 made) and five free throws (three made) to reach that point total. Sophomore guard Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y.) followed with 13 points.

Bentley shot 57 percent from three-point land, outscoring New Haven 39-12 from outside the arc. The Falcons connected at a 44 percent rate overall, limited the Chargers to 38 percent and were much more effective at capitalizing on turnovers. They turned 11 into 13 points while New Haven managed only four off nine Falcon giveaways.

New Haven finished with a 37-30 rebound edge and outscored the Falcons in the paint, 30-14.

Bentley, which remained in sixth place in the NE-10's Northeast Division, will return to action next Wednesday at Saint Rose.
