Stonehill Uses 14 3-Pointers to Upend Bentley, 97-83; Grassa Breaks Bentley 3-Point Record

WALTHAM, Mass. – A 26-9 Stonehill College run over the final 6:05 of the first half turned the game around and a 12-2 spurt down the stretch secured the outcome as the Skyhawks upended Bentley University, 97-83, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Sophomore guard Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio) powered Stonehill with 25 points and ten assists, freshman Ryan Logan (Frederickton, Ohio) followed with 22 points and eight rebounds, and six-foot-eight junior Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J.) didn't miss a shot from the floor en route to a 19-point, ten-rebound performance.

For Bentley, senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS) and junior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) scored 18 and 16 respectively, with Grassa breaking Sean Cooke's school record for career three-pointers in the process. He connected from long distance four times, with his last one, coming from the top of the key in the final minute, his record-breaking 277th.

Bentley used a 13-3 spurt to claim its biggest lead of the game at 29-18. Grassa got things going with a straight-on three, freshman guard Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, N.S./Hun School) followed with a banked-in jumper and sophomore forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) had a personal 8-0 run.

About a minute-and-a-half later, Cole launched the Stonehill run with a dunk and a three-pointer from the right wing. He had nine points during that strong finish to the opening half, match Bentley's output as a team over that span. Six of the Skyhawks' ten threes from the opening stanza came during that stretch, including two by sophomore guard Adam Bramanti (Middleton).

The two teams were never separated by more than six points during the first 15 minutes of the second with Bentley getting within a single point three times, the last with 13:07 left on a Grassa three-ball.

After Hyland knocked down a three from the right corner to cut the Stonehill lead to three, 76-73, with 6:45 left, the Falcons went nearly five minutes without scoring again from the field until Grassa's record-setting three with 49.8 seconds. That dry spell enabled the Skyhawks to push the lead to double figures and the visitors closed out the game by making eight of eight free throws in the final 61 seconds.

Grassa, limited to 26 minutes due to foul trouble, hit half of his eight attempts from outside, and Hyland complemented his 16 points with eight rebounds, including five offensive. Sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) followed with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Bentley also received ten points and six assists from sophomore guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and eight points off the bench from both Duke and Phelps.

Stonehill (8-17, 5-15 NE-10) finished 14 of 31 from three-point land and outshot the Falcons overall, 48-43 percent.  The Skyhawks also controlled the boards, 44-35, and finished with a 12-4 edge in points off turnovers.

Bentley, which dropped to 16-10 (10-10 NE-10) following its third straight loss, will wrap up the regular season Tuesday with a 7:30 home game against Franklin Pierce.
