Hot Shooting Powers Bentley to 15th Win, 89-48 over Assumptrion

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and sophomore forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) combined for 28 points off the bench and all five starters scored between eight and 11 as Bentley University rolled to an 89-48 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball at Laska Gym Thursday night.

Bentley, which clinched a winning record for the 18th time in the last 19 seasons, shot 57 percent overall, knocked down 10 of 19 three-pointers and made 17 of 22 free throws (77 percent). On the other hand, Assumption finished with percentages of .277 overall, .176 from three and .409 at the line.

The 41-point victory boosted Bentley to 15-7 overall and 9-7 in the NE-10 while Assumption dropped to 5-15 overall and 3-12 in the conference.

Nine offensive rebounds for Assumption in the first six-and-a half minutes helped the home team open an early 16-12 lead. The Falcons bounced back with eight straight points, a flurry launched by a Hyland triple from the right wing, to reverse the four-point differential and never trailed again.

It was a one-point game after Greyhound freshman guard Marcus Murray (Silver Spring, Md.) hit a baseline jumper with 7:29 left until the break, but the remainder of the night belonged to the Falcons. A 17-4 burst over the final 7:15, including 8-0 over the last 3:06, made it a 41-27 game at the break.

Five different players scored during that stretch, including Hyland with five. He hit a short pull-up to make it 28-23, dunked after driving baseline to stretch the lead to 35-27 and hit one of two from the foul line. Phelps was also effective off the bench in the first half, putting up seven in nine minutes.

An 11-1 spurt early in the second made it a 24-point game, 57-33, with 13:53 left, and Bentley ran off 20 unanswered, over a span of seven minutes to more than double the Hounds, 87-43 with two minutes still remaining. All told, Bentley outscored Assumption 65-25 over the final 27:15.

Hyland finished with a team-high 15 points on six-of-nine shooting with a pair of three-pointers. He also had a team-high eight rebounds and three assists during a productive 20 minutes. Phelps made five of six shots and finished with 13 points and five boards in his 18 minutes of action.

Senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS) and junior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each tallied 11 for Bentley and sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) added ten. Coach Jay Lawson, who saw 13 of his 15 players score in the game, also received eight points apiece from sophomore guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) and junior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA HS).

Sophomore guard Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J.), Assumption's only player with more than eight points, needed 13 shots and six free throw attempts to score 14 points.

Bentley, dominated on the boards early, bounced back to finish with a two-rebound advantage, 42-40. The Falcons outscored the Hounds 36-20 in the paint and turned 15 Assumption turnovers into 23 points. On the other hand, the Hounds managed just nine points off a dozen takeaways.

Bentley, in a stretch of two games in 13 days, will be off until Tuesday when Merrimack College comes into the Dana Center for a 7:30 pm contest.
