McFarland Scores 19 as Bentley Shoots Past Adelphi, 75-51

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) scored 19 points and sophomore guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) followed with 13 as Bentley University rolled to its fifth win in six games, 75-51 over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday night at the Dana Center.

Bentley, which outscored the Panthers 36-10 over a stretch of 13 minutes midway through the contest, improved to 12-4 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Adelphi, held to just 31 percent shooting for the game, fell to 4-11 overall and 2-7 NE-10.

The Falcons had a number of impressive runs during the game, including a 16-0 first-half burst that put coach Jay Lawson's team in front for good, 25-11 with 6:43 until the break. Furness got it started with a lay-up to even the score at 11, McFarland tallied the next five and sophomore forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) made it 18-11 with a dunk.

The run continued with threes from McFarland and junior forward Jate Cheshul (Galloway, N.J./ Holy Spirit HS), and was finished with junior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) making one of two from the foul line.

Neither team managed a basket in the final 2:35 of the first, but five Falcon free throws , including two apiece by Phelps and Furness, sent Bentley into the half up a dozen, 32-20.

Adelphi opened the second with a three-pointer, but the next ten minutes was all Bentley as red-hot shooting (13-19 including five from downtown) blew the game wide open, 63-30 with more than nine minutes still remaining. Included in that dominating stretch were a pair of long threes from senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS), seven points from McFarland and six by Furness.

The sensational second-half shooting by Bentley (.594) was in direct contrast to the first half when the Falcons hit only 33 percent of their shots. That was still better than Adelphi during the first 20 minutes (26 percent, including 1-for-11 from three), and the home team was also able to capitalize at the line, making 13 of 16 before the break.

McFarland made 7 of 11 shots overall and also had four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Furness was five of seven from the field and he also provided six rebounds, sharing the team-lead with junior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA). Phelps was the other Falcon in doubles, helping out with 12 points off the bench.

Adelphi was led by junior forward Duane Morgan (West Orange, N.J.) and sophomore guard Anthony Libroia (Bayside, N.Y.), each with 13 points.

Overall, Bentley outshot the Panthers 48-31 percent and made twice as many threes, 8-4. The Falcons turned 19 turnovers into 23 points and finished with a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Next up for the Falcons is a Saturday matinee at American International College.
