ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Junior guard Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) came off the bench to score 16 points in only 13 minutes and three teammates joined him in doubles as the Bentley University men's basketball team opened 2014 with an impressive 76-57 win over host Dominican College (N.Y.) in the first round of the James Clancy Memorial Tournament Friday night at the Hennessey Center.

Hyland, junior guard JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) and sophomore guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) combined to make 18 of 24 shots while teaming for 43 points and 16 rebounds.

The win lifted the Falcons to 9-3 while the loss was just the second in ten games for the Chargers, and their first in seven home games this season. Bentley never trailed in the game and the only tie after the opening tip came at 2-2.

A lay-up by sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) broke the early deadlock and launched a 9-0 run that put the visitors in front for good. Furness netted the next five and Hyland, playing his first game in nearly eight weeks, made it 11-2 with a second-chance lay-up.

After Dominican got within five, Bentley used a 15-5 run to take a 14-point advantage, 44-30, into the halftime locker room. Hyland scored the first five, Koury knocked down a three-ball and McFarland tallied the final seven.

The momentum continued when play resumed with Bentley scoring the first seven to stretch the differential to 21 at 51-30. Senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical HS) connected from downtown, Koury made a lay-up and Hyland took it in for a basket following a steal.

Bentley continued to extend its lead with the spread peaking at 28, 69-41, on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) with 8:31 left.

Hyland made seven of his nine shots and also provided seven rebounds, six coming at the offensive end. Koury matched him in the rebound column and finished with 14 points on six-of-nine shooting, and Furness made five of six shots, including a trio of threes, for 13 points. McFarland was the fourth Falcon in doubles as he finished with 11, along with seven boards, two steals and a block. Phelps was also a factor off the bench, with seven points.

Junior guard Robert Hueston (Middletown, N.Y.) led Dominican with 14 points, but six-foot-seven Nick Smith (Middletown, N.Y.) was held to 10 on just 2-of-10 shooting. The leading scorer in Division II nationally, he was held to 17 below his season form.

Bentley outshot the home team 47-35 percent and had a 9-4 advantage in three-pointers. The Falcons outscored Dominican 34-18 in the paint and used a 42-31 rebounding edge for an 18-2 differential in second-chance points. Turnovers were about the same (Bentley had one less), but the Falcons were more effective in taking advantage, with a 16-8 lead in points off turns.

The tournament continues on Saturday with Bentley taking on Post University at 4 pm.
