McFarland & Furness Combine for 52 Points as Bentley Improves to 7-0, 89-84 over Southern N.H.

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) scored 32 points, including 19 in the final 14:20 after his team fell behind by 10, and classmate Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) added 20 as undefeated Bentley University rallied for an 89-84 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at the Dana Center.

The two former Cushing Academy teammates combined to shoot 20 of 28 overall, six of eight from three and six of six from the line as Bentley improved to 7-0 overall (4-0 NE-10) and extended its winning streak to 11, dating back to last February.

Bentley, which has shot at least 53 percent for the year, had its best shooting night thus far, finishing at .571 with a dozen three-pointers.  That included a 65 percent first half and was achieved despite a 1-for-8 start to the second half.

Down 60-50 after the Penmen (3-3, 1-3 NE-10) opened the second half with a 17-3 run, Bentley went to McFarland when it needed the points and he frequently delivered. His put-back and consecutive three-pointers in a span of 61 seconds ignited the comeback, cutting the deficit to four at 62-58.

Later in the second half with SNHU up seven, 70-63, McFarland ignited a 13-2 spurt that returned the lead to the home team, 76-72 with 6:29 to play, He hit both a three from the left wing and a short jumper, Furness followed with a runner, and after two Penmen free throws, sophomore forward Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden HS) put the Falcons up two with a fast-break lay-up and two free throws. Another Furness jumper followed to make it a four-point bulge.

SNHU answered with six straight to grab its final lead of the night, 78-76, but the Falcons came right back with a 9-2 run. Furness connected on a three from the right wing to put Bentley in front to stay, 79-78 with 3:43 left, and the spurt also included a McFarland lay-up, two free throws from junior forward Andrew Shaw (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and a foul line jumper from senior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS).

Two McFarland free throws and a basket from Furness in the final 30 seconds locked up the win.

Bentley had led by as many as 13 points in the first half before SNHU took advantage of second-chance points and Falcon turnovers to close to within four at the break, 47-43. That 13-point lead, 26-13, was built on the strength of a 13-0 run that included a pair of threes from Grassa and one from Furness.

McFarland's second 30-point game of the season saw him make 12 of 18 overall, four of five three-pointers and all four of his free throws. He also led the Falcons on the boards with eight rebounds. Furness connected on eight of 10 shots and is now 18 of 22 in his last two home games.

Bentley also received 10 points apiece from Grassa and Shaw, with Grassa also dishing eight assists, and seven off the bench from Phelps.

A trio of players combined for 63 of Southern New Hampshire's 84 points with junior Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) leading the way with 23, senior guard CJ Marriro (Boston) following with 21 and sophomore Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) scoring 19.

Southern New Hampshire shot 52 percent in the second half and 48.5 for the game, but couldn't match the Falcons' success from three, hitting only 29 percent from downtown (7-24).

Bentley's next game is a full week away, next Wednesday night at Merrimack College.
