Fast Starts to Each Half Propel Assumption to 69-58 Win over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Twelve unanswered points by Assumption College to start the game and a 16-5 run at the beginning of the second created a deficit Bentley University was never able to overcome and the Greyhounds went on to a 69-58 win over the Falcons in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Wednesday evening at Laska Gymnasium.

Guard Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, Conn.), a guard who eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone, powered Assumption with 25 points and senior teammate Tim Beinert (Bellerose Village, N.Y.) followed with 17, including nine of the game's first 12.

Junior guard Jasper Grassa (Lynn/Lynn Classical HS) topped the scoring list for the Falcons with 14 points and freshman guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) added ten off the bench.

Assumption remained at the top of the conference standings, improving to 10-2 overall and 7-1 NE-10. Bentley, which was playing on the road for the first time in 38 days, dropped to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Beinert scored the game's first six points, Donahue nailed the first of his seven three-pointers and Beinert also connected from downtown before the Falcons removed the zero from the scoreboard on a free throw by freshman Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) 4:17 into the contest.

McFarland's free throw ignited a 9-1 spurt that got the Falcons within four, 13-9.

Later in the first half, a 9-3 Falcon run that included a Grassa three and four points by McFarland cut the deficit to two, 23-21 with 3:36 left. That would be as close as the game would be after the opening minute.

After Assumption countered with five straight, Bentley scored the last four of the first half to go into the break down three at 28-25.

Donahue opened the second-half scoring with a pair of three-balls and Assumption went on to open a 44-30 lead seven minutes into the frame. Beinert was also instrumental in the strong Greyhound start to the second with six points.

Assumption's lead eventually peaked at 20, before Bentley finished with a 13-4 spurt that included four points apiece from senior guard Mike Topercer (Scottsdale, Ariz./New Hampton Prep) and junior guard DJ Guillette (Lunenburg/Lunenburg HS).

Grassa and Furness, in addition to being the Falcons' top scorers, shared the team rebounding lead with six apiece. Grassa made five of 11 shots overall, with two three-pointers, and Furness was four of five from the field. McFarland followed with nine points and four rebounds, and sophomore guard Jate Cheshul (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) chipped in with eight points.

Donahue needed 19 shots, including 16 from outside the arc, for his 25 points. Beinert was much more efficient, six of ten, and he also had ten rebounds to help his team to a plus-16 on the glass, 47-31.

Bentley actually shot better, 40-38 percent, but the Hounds made three more treys, 9-6, and attempted a dozen more shots, due in large part to 22 offensive boards.

Bentley's next two will be at home, Saturday against Pace University (3:30 pm) and Tuesday against American International.
