Fast Start Propels Bentley to 66-43 Win over Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. – Three-pointers from freshman Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS), sophomore JP Koury (Red Bank, N.J./CBA) and junior Jasper Grassa (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical HS), all on second-chance opportunities, propelled Bentley University to a 9-0 start and the Falcons went on to post a 66-43 wire-to-wire win over Goldey-Beacom College in non-conference men's basketball at the Jones Center Saturday afternoon.

Furness and Koury both finished with 13 points to share team-high scoring honors with freshman forward Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS), who also collected 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.

The trio of threes to open the game was the result of five early offensive rebounds by the Falcons, who tracked down eight of the first nine errant shots overall.

The Lightning, kept off the scoreboard for the first four minutes and limited to only one field goal over the first 8:50, were only down four, 9-5, at that juncture as the Falcons were also cold at the offensive end.

A second-chance lay-up by Koury with 11 minutes left in the half was Bentley's first basket inside the arc, and his lay-up following a steal about 30 seconds later was the team's first points that didn't follow an offensive rebound. Those two baskets launched a 23-5 explosion that resulted in a commanding 22-point lead, 32-10, with three-and-a-half minutes left on the first-half clock.

The halftime score stood at 34-14 as Bentley had as many three-pointers (five) as Goldey-Beacom had in total field goals. The Falcons doubled up the Lightning on the glass, 28-14, with a 10-3 advantage on the offensive boards resulting in a 12-2 differential in second chance points.

Grassa, with nine points, and Koury, eight in his first start of the season, were Bentley's top scorers during the opening half.

After both teams had trouble scoring during the first eight minutes after play resumed, Bentley ran off seven unanswered to put the game away with that run putting the visitors up 24, 47-23 with nine minutes to play. Furness had five of the seven, including an eight-footer and a fall-away jumper.

Later in the second, Bentley's lead peaked at 28, 59-31, when sophomore forward Jate Cheshul (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) and Koury both connected from downtown during an 8-0 burst.

McFarland, who has scored in double figures in all four games he's played as a collegian, made half of his 12 shots and grabbed five of his rebounds at the offensive end. Koury and Grassa both sank a pair of triples, with Koury also providing five rebounds and four steals. Grassa'a line also included four rebounds and three assists.

Furness, Bentley's fourth double-figure scorer, finished with 12 on four-of-six shooting and also had four rebounds, three steals and one block.

Sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Wilmington, Del.) was the only Goldey-Beacom player to score more than seven, and he needed 19 field goal attempts and seven free throw attempts to reach 14.

Bentley, 2-2,  shot only 37 percent, but that was eight percent higher than the Lightning. The Falcons also were a season-best plus-12 on the boards and committed only 11 turnovers. Most didn't hurt as GBC (0-3) managed only six points off them while Bentley scored 18 off 14 Lightning giveaways.

Bentley's next five are against Northeast-10 teams, beginning Tuesday night at home against Merrimack.
