Leclerc Sparks #7 Bentley Past Post, 79-68; Tracey Ties Career High with 26

WATERBURY, Conn. -- Junior guard Sam Leclerc (Fayette, Maine/Winthrop HS) scored all 12 of his points during a decisive 16-0 second-half run and senior forward Brian Tracey (Bow Mar, Colo./Heritage HS) matched his career-high with 26 points as Bentley University prevailed over Post University, 79-68, Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.

Bentley, ranked seventh in the preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II coaches poll, evened its record 2-2 while Post fell to 0-3 on the year.

Bentley, which led by as many as 16 in the first half, fell behind on several occasions in the second half after a bevy of Eagle three-pointers. The final Post lead came with 10:33 left when a triple launched by graduate guard Cecil Stinson (Montclair, N.J.) made it 61-60.

Leclerc countered with a three-ball of his own, putting the Falcons back in front. Sophomore forward Dan O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass./Lexington HS) followed with a short jumper and Leclerc buried another trifecta, putting the Falcons up 68-61.

The run continued with a basket by senior guard Tom Dowling (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side HS), a three-point play on a drive to the hole by Leclerc, and Leclerc's third three-pointer in a span of five minutes.

By the time Stinson hit a jumper with 4:45 left, Bentley had held the Eagles scoreless for more than five-and-a-half minutes and the Falcons had turned a one-point deficit into a 15-point bulge.

With Tracey and grad student Mike Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville HS) leading the way, Bentley was hot from the start. The Falcons hit 10 of their first 13 shot attempts, vaulting out to a 28-12 lead. Quinn sank three treys in the first five minutes and Tracey also had nine early points.

Post, down by nine early in the second, turned the around with a 13-2 spurt that featured three triples by junior guard Ronnie Sawyer (Rahway, N.J.) in a stretch of 63 seconds.  The Eagle lead peaked at four, 56-52, before an 8-2 Falcon spurt that featured threes from Dowling and Quinn put Bentley back in front, 60-58. Post briefly regained the lead, on Stinson's three, before Leclair took things in his own hands.

Tracey finished 8 of 14 from the field with two threes, and also went to the line a dozen times, making eight. He completed his first double-double of the season with 10 boards, and also had two assists. Quinn followed with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Dowling provided nine points off the bench.

Stinson and Sawyer led the way for Post, with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Bentley outshot the home team, 55-42 percent, and dominated the boards after intermission (20-7) for a 37-23 margin overall. The Falcons also had a significant edge at the line (17-23 as compared to 4-9), but saw Post score 23 points off 17 turnovers.

Bentley returns home for a Northeast-10 Conference encounter with Saint Anselm Tuesday at 7:30.
