Late Stroke Gives Bellarmine 3-2 Win over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two fourth-quarter penalty strokes, including the game-winner with 2.7 seconds left, gave visiting Bellarmine University a 3-2 win over Bentley University in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

Bentley took a 2-1 lead into the final quarter, but that disappeared when junior Jillian Fazio (Miller Place, N.Y.) took and made a penalty stroke with 8:46 to play.

It appeared the game was headed for overtime, but after a penalty corner with 11 seconds remaining, the visiting Knights were awarded their second stroke of the quarter. This time, senior Merit Harris (Louisville, Ky.) attempted it and she buried it in the lower left corner of the cage.

After falling behind early, Bentley (4-8) drew even when junior Sam Simione (Cheshire, Conn./ Cheshire HS) scored her fourth of the season with 11:01 left in the third.

Later in the third, with 26 seconds left, senior Keally Ingersoll (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge HS) gave Bentley the lead, with her third of the year assisted by classmate Janelle Magoon (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry HS).

Bentley outshot the visitors 11-7, including 8-3 in the second half, but Bellarmine (7-2) had three more corners, 10-7.

Bentley returns to conference play Tuesday with a 3 pm game at St. Michael's.
