WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Sam Pavano (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) and junior forward Katie Quilty (Marstons Mills/Barnstable HS) each scored twice as Bentley University never trailed en route to a 5-1 win over visiting Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday afternoon.
With its second straight win, Bentley evened its overall record at 4-4 and improved to 2-0 in conference play. Southern Connecticut dropped to 2-5 overall, including 0-2 NE-10, after falling in a game that featured 33 shots (20 by the host Falcons) and 24 penalty corners (13 by the Owls).
Junior midfielder and tri-captain Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS) wasted no time putting the Falcons in front as she scored off a penalty corner just 3:54 after the opening whistle.
Quilty made it a 2-0 game with 10:40 left until intermission, knocking in a rebound following a save by freshman Brianna Craft (Hamden, Conn.).
Southern spoiled the shutout bid of Falcon senior and tri-captain Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS) when senior Zoe Fanolis (Hamden, Conn.) cut the Bentley lead in half with 15:41 to play.
Nine minutes later, it was a commanding 5-1 lead after Bentley erupted for three goals in a span of 6:50. Pavano scored the first two, both off penalty corners taken by sophomore Morgan Van Epps (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa, N.Y.). She also provided the assist on the game's final goal, scored by Quilty with a little less than seven minutes to play.
Schaedel made seven saves for Bentley and Craft tallied ten for Southern.
Bentley will also be at home on Saturday, hosting Pace at 1 pm.
