Second-Chance Goals Propel No. 6 Merrimack Past Bentley, 4-0, in NE-10’s

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman Mary McNeil (Canton) had two goals and was involved in another in a span of 15 minutes, powering third-seeded Merrimack College to a 4-0 win over sixth-seeded Bentley University in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championships Wednesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.

With the win, the sixth-ranked team in this week's NFHCA Division II national rankings improved to 14-4 overall. Bentley saw its season end with a 9-9 final record.

Each of Merrimack's first three goals came on second-chance opportunities following Falcon saves, the first two by Falcon junior netminder Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS) and the third after a defensive stop by senior Molly Rowe (Newburyport/Newburyport HS).

Junior Hannah Magerman (Franklin) gave the home team at 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, knocking in the rebound after a McNeil shot. A little more than five minutes later, McNeil's 13th doubled the Merrimack lead, making it a 2-0 contest.

McNeil's second goal of the afternoon came at 4:09 of the second half as she got her stick on a ball popped up in the air by Rowe and knocked it into the cage.

Senior Lindsay Dobrecki completed the scoring with 5:10 left in the second, the goal her seventh.

Schaedel finished with a career-high 11 saves while her counterpart from Merrimack, senior Madison Davis (San Jose, Calif.) recorded two. The Warriors totaled 20 shots and eight penalty corners while Bentley's final numbers were eight and six with four of the penalty corners coming in a flurry at the end of the first half.
