Southern Connecticut Uses Late First-Half Goal to Top Bentley, 1-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior forward Colleen Murphy (Branford, Conn.) netted the game's only goal with 22 seconds left in the first half, propelling Southern Connecticut State to a 1-0 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Murphy knocked in a rebound of her own shot from the right post for record her fourth goal of the season.

Bentley, outshot 8-4 before intermission, controlled play in the second, peppering the Owl net with 18 shots. However, the Falcons were unable to get the ball past senior goalkeeper Audrey Doloff (Raynham, Mass.), who totaled 11 saves in the shutout victory.

For the Falcons, senior Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) posted three saves in the first for Bentley, junior Evelyn Schaedel (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS) turned away four in the second and classmate Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS) had her fifth defensive save of the year, tying her for the conference lead.

Bentley dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference with all three wins coming at home and the three losses on the road. Southern improved to 3-4 overall with its second conference win in as many attempts.

Bentley will be back on the road Friday night for a 7 pm encounter at Pace University.
