No. 4 Stonehill Rallies in 2nd for 3-1 Win over Bentley

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Junior Erika Kelly (Watertown) led a three-goal barrage in the second half to lead Stonehill College, the fourth-ranked team in Division II, to a 3-1 victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Falcons, dropping Bentley to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Stonehill, which completed a season-sweep of the Falcons, improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 NE-10.

Shots were hard to come by in the opening half with only five combined. Bentley's only shot of the opening 35-minutes, in the 33rd minute by freshman Taylor Kane (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS), sent the visitors into the halftime break riding a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Tori Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS), who had her 12th defensive save of the fall, assisted on Kane's goal, a flip from the right side following two passes after a penalty corner. The goal was her second as a collegian.

The lead held until the seventh minute of the second half when junior Elizabeth Thornton (Needham) knocked in a rebound following a save by junior Katie Kelley (Walpole/Walpole HS). Kelley, in her first game after missing five due to injury, recorded ten saves.

A little more than two minutes after Thornton's tying goal, Kelly knocked in the rebound of her own shot for her tenth of the season and what proved to be the game-winner. Six minutes later, she converted a penalty stroke to complete the scoring.

Stonehill outshot the Falcons 19-7, including 15-6 in the second half, and finished with a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Senior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md.) earned the victory in goal, making two saves in the process.

Bentley is off until Saturday when it will host Adelphi University at noon.
