Martorelli & Powell Help Bentley Extend Win Streak to 5, 3-0 over St. Michael’s

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Melissa Martorelli (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel HS), the current Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had two assists and senior goalie Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) recorded her fifth shutout of the season as Bentley University topped St. Michael's College, 3-0, in college field hockey Tuesday night.

The victory gave the Falcons (9-6, 6-2 NE-10) their first five-game winning streak since the 2009 season and coupled with Merrimack's 2-1 win over UMass-Lowell, moved Coach Jessica Spencer's club into a tie for second in the NE-10 in the loss column.

Goal scorers for the Falcons were senior Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS) and freshmen Meghan Talerman (Centerville/Barnstable HS) and Sally James (Mequon, Wisc./University School of Milwaukee). All came off corners as Bentley was very efficient in that regard, scoring on three of their five.

Maguire gave the Falcons the lead with 14:24 left in the first when she redirected a Martorelli shot into the cage for her ninth of the season.

It remained a 1-0 game until about the midpoint of the second half when Talerman and James scored about two minutes apart. Talerman's sixth of the season came directly off a corner taken by classmate Becca Moore (Belmont/Belmont HS), and the first career goal by James was a redirect of a Martorelli shot.

Powell, now tied for the NE-10 lead in shutouts, finished with four saves, including two in the final 80 seconds to preserve the blanking. Sophomore Jackie Chisholm (New Braintree) had the same number for St. Michael's (5-12, 3-6).

Bentley closes out the home schedule Thursday night against Saint Anselm and wraps up the regular season Saturday at Southern Connecticut State.
