New Haven Shocks Bentley in Final Seconds for 2nd Straight Season, 22-21

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second straight year, the University of New Haven scored in the final three seconds to stun the Bentley University Falcons and claim victory on the Falcons' home field.

This time, sophomore Danny Stock (North Massapequa, N.Y.) booted a 34-yard field goal with 2.2 seconds left to cap a 12-play, 75-yard drive and give the Chargers a 22-21 victory in Northeast-10 Conference football Friday night after the Falcons entered the final five minutes with an eight-point lead.

Last year, it was a touchdown with 1.3 seconds that gave New Haven a 38-35 victory, spoiling Bentley's 2014 Homecoming.

Bentley, now 0-2 overall after dropping its conference opener, received a number of solid individual efforts, including a career-best 136 rushing yards on 26 carries by junior forward Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy).

Senior quarterback Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) accounted for all three Falcon touchdowns, two thru the air and the other on a seven-yard keeper. Junior linebacker Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/Barnstable HS) was in on ten tackles and junior punter Tyler Ford (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan HS) tied the school record for longest punt with a 68-yarder.

New Haven (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) got on the scoreboard first with grad student Trevor Officer (Monroe, N.Y.) taking it in from the one midway through the opening stanza. That came two plays after junior running back Andre Anderson (New Haven, Conn.) broke a 69-yard run, the third time this season he's had a gain of at least that length. Anderson had a huge game for the Chargers, amassing 242 alll-purpose yards with 140 rushing (9.5 per carry) and 96 on returns.

Bentley answered right back with Montalto directing an 11-play, 69-yard drive that evened the game at 7-7 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. He completed all four of his passes during the march with a nine-yarder to freshman Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) putting the points on the board. It was the first career TD for Mahoney.

With 2:42 left in the second, Montalto, operating out of an empty backfield, took it up the middle for seven and the go-ahead score. Junior Michael Baron (Medfield/Roxbury Latin School) tacked on the extra point to make it a 14-7 game. The seven-play, 80-yard drive featured a 45-yard pass from Montalto to tight end Alex Farkes (Boston/BB&N).

That was too much time to leave New Haven and the Chargers were able to counter with a nine-play, 62-yard drive that was finished with a two-yard run with Anderson with 27 seconds left. However, Bentley went into the halftime break up 14-13 after senior Matt McDermott (Merrimac/Central Catholic HS) blocked the PAT.

After deferring to start the game, it was Bentley's ball to start the second half. Coach Bill Kavanaugh's team used the first 5:21 to drive 75 yards in 11 plays, Montalto teaming up with Farkes on a 23-yard scoring pass to make it a 21-13 game.

It would stay that way until the fourth-quarter clocked dipped under five minutes. Anderson scored his second touchdown of the night from the one, finishing a drive that encompassed 12 plays, 87 yards and 4:19 of clock time. The Chargers went for two,  but the running attempt by junior QB Ajee Patterson (Neptune, N.J.) was snuffed out by senior Paul Norris (North Attleboro/North Attleboro HS) and grad student Evan Mattern (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS), preserving the two-point lead.

After Bentley was forced to punt, Ford pinned New Haven back on the eight with his 68-yard boot matching the record set  by David Kelmer in 1997.

Four plays of 11 yards or more brought the Chargers past midfield and a 25-yard completion by Patterson got the  ball down to the Falcon 21. After a spike, a short run and an incomplete pass, Stock delivered the stunner, driving the ball through the uprights.

Montalto's night saw him complete 12 of 18 passes for 130 yards and run for 14 net yards despite being sacked five times. Farkes accounted for most of the receiving yards as he caught three for 77 yards.

Bentley came up with the game's only two turnovers, including a fumble recovery by senior nose guard Jeff Amell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) on the Chargers' first play of the game. Despite taking over at the New Haven 24, the Falcons were unable to capitalize, turning it over on downs. Later in the game, Sam McDonald (Norfolk/King Phillip Reg. HS) had his tenth career interception, the most of any active Division II junior.

Bentley controlled the ball for 38:41 and converted 11 of 18 third downs, but it was the Chargers to had the edge in total offense, 418-332. Patterson threw for 191 yards after entering the game in the second quarter, completing 16 of 28.

Bentley will look to rebound next Saturday when it celebrates Homecoming against Southern Connecticut State (2 pm).
