Guadagnoli Turns in Record-Setting Performance as Bentley Flies Past Saint Anselm, 56-41

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) broke the single game and season Bentley University records for passing yards and total offense while accounting for a total of six touchdowns as the Falcons used a school record 694 yards of offense to register a 56-41 home field victory over Saint Anselm College during Northeast-10 Championship Weekend Saturday afternoon.

Guadagnoli, who plans to return next fall for his final year of eligibility, finished 30 of 43 for 510 yards and five passing touchdowns, and also ran for 42 yards and a score. The 552 yards total offense broke the mark of 513, set by Ted Larkin against Bryant in 1999, and his 510 passing yards bettered Marc Eddy's total of 504, achieved by Marc Eddy during a 2004 NCAA playoff game against Edinboro.

Guadagnoli finished the season with 3,310 passing yards and 3,645 total offense, taking possession of Larkin's 14-year-old records of 3,275 and 3,490.

His primary target, as usual, was junior Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS), who caught TD passes of 77 and 18 yards while finishing with 10 catches for 199 yards, both career-bests.

Amazingly, Guadagnoli's 510 passing yards wasn't the most in the game as Saint Anselm freshman Yianni Gavalas (Manhasset, N.Y.) threw for 559 yards and four touchdowns while completing a ridiculous 51 of 74 passes.

Combined, the two teams put up 64 first downs (35 by Saint Anselm), 14 touchdowns, 1,069 passing yards and 1,307 yards total offense, and amazingly, it was all achieved in less than three hours. Bentley's 694 yards of total offense shattered the school record of 626 that was tied earlier this season.

Bentley led 14-7 after the opening quarter after sandwiching touchdown runs of four yards by freshman Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy) and one yard by Guadagnoli around Gavalas' first of three TD passes to junior Ahkeen Williams (DeWitt, N.Y.). One of three Hawks to record double-digits in receptions, he finished with 14 catches for 158 yards.

The two teams erupted for 41 combined points in the second quarter, including 28 by Bentley that sent the Falcons into the break up 42-20. Senior Kent Kozar (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS) caught a 13-yard pass from Guadagnoli for his first career touchdown, freshman Mike Gardiner (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll HS/Bedford (N.H.) Hand S) broke a 60-yard run on a trick play, and Hill caught his 11th and 12th TD passes of the fall.

Both teams put two TDs on the scoreboard in the third quarter with Kozar catching his second career TD pass, an 18-yarder, and Gardiner scoring on a hook-and-ladder play. On a third-and-14 from the Hawk 40, Guadagnoli completed a 10-yard pass to sophomore Chris Calvanese (Norfolk/Xaverian Bros. HS). He lateralled the ball to Gardiner, who sprinted the remaining 30 yards into the end zone.

A quiet fourth quarter included only Gavalas' fourth TD pass of the day.

Guadagnoli spread the ball around to seven different receivers. In addition to the big day from Hill, junior Chris Malonis (Dracut/Dracut HS) caught five for 55, and both Bannerman and Kozar pulled down four balls.

Three Bentley players reached double-figures in tackles on a day that saw Saint Anselm run 95 plays from scrimmage. Senior linebacker Kyle Young (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial HS) led the way with a dozen and both junior safety Nick McCarthy (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) and junior corner Brad Keirstead (Waltham/Waltham HS) made ten. Keirstead also had three pass break-ups, including two on fourth-down plays.

Sophomore Michael Baron (Medfield/Roxbury Latin School) was perfect on eight extra-point attempts, finishing with 37 of 38 for the season and a total of 64 points.

Bentley, which was the sixth seed, finished the season at 6-5, the 23rd winning campaign in 26 varsity seasons, and Saint Anselm, the ninth seed, closed at 1-10.
