17-Point 2nd-Quarter Propels Stonehill Past Bentley, 30-3

EASTON, Mass. – Senior Jamal Johnson (Brockton) rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, senior Logan Meyer (Ventura, Calif.) threw for 256 yards and two scores, and the Skyhawks took advantage of four turnovers as Stonehill College rolled past Bentley University, 30-3, in Northeast-10 Conference football action Saturday night at W.B. Mason Stadium.

It was a rough night all around for the Falcons, who gave up 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to dig a 23-0 hole and didn't get on the scoreboard until sophomore Michael Baron (Medfield/ Roxbury Latin School) kicked a 22-yard field goal with 13:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Stonehill offense came up with 24 first downs and 420 total yards while the Skyhawk defense finished with two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and six sacks.  It also limited the Falcons to 1-for-9 on third down conversions and 0-for-4 on fourth downs, with Bentley's three points its lowest output since the finale of the 2007 season.

Bentley (2-2, 1-1 NE-10) had four drives that advanced inside the Skyhawk 35 before Baron's field goal, including a fumble just shy of the goal line with 2:41 left in the first. While a touchdown and extra point would have put the Falcons in front 7-6 at the time, the giveaway resulted in an eight-yard, 80-yard drive, with Johnson taking it in from the 19 for a 13-0 lead.

Stonehill (3-1, 3-0 NE-10) opened the game up in the waning minutes of the first half. Meyer threw a 35-yard TD pass to junior Nate Robitaille (Attleboro), the Falcons lost the ball on a fumble on their first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, and sophomore Steve Grzywacz (Manchester, N.H.) booted a 25-yard field goal with 30 seconds left to make it 23-0.

It remained that way until Baron's field goal in the fourth concluded a 10-play, 81-yard drive. Stonehill answered right back with Johnson scoring his second TD of the night on a three-yard run.

Johnson accumulated his 151 yards on 31 carries, and Meyer completed 17 of 32 through the air, with Robitaille catching nearly half of those, finishing eight for 116.

For Bentley, senior QB Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) completed 20 of 31 for 217 yards, and also ran for 28 net yards. Junior Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) led the receiving corps with eight for 88 yards.

Defensively for the Falcons, senior free safety AC Carter (Marlborough/Marlborough HS) and junior cornerback Brad Keirstead (Waltham/Waltham HS) led the way with 11 and nine tackles, respectively.

Bentley will look to bounce back next Saturday when it hosts Saint Anselm at 1 pm.
