Hill, Kiley Each Catch 2 TD Passes as Bentley Blanks Pace, 42-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) and senior Bill Kiley (Quincy/Boston College HS) each caught two touchdown passes and the Falcon defense posted a season-opening shutout, blanking visiting Pace University 42-0 in Northeast-10 Conference football Friday night before more than 2700 fans.

Hill finished with four catches for 136 yards, with his scoring plays covering 44 and 30 yards, and Kiley (3 for 81) caught TD passes of nine and 40 yards. Oddly, each was on the receiving end of scoring strikes thrown by junior starter Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) and senior Luke Zahradka (Franklin Square, N.Y./H.L. Carey HS), with Zahradka accounting for the two longest.

While the Bentley offense was mounting a total of 562 yards (the team's most since October 2005), the Falcon defense blanked the Setters for the second straight season, giving up only 245 yards. Pace's deepest penetration was the Bentley 11 late in the fourth, before a bad snap led to the game's only turnover.

Guadagnoli's first possession as Bentley's starting QB resulted in a nine-play, 79-yard drive and a 7-0 lead with 8:42 left in the opening quarter. Three players after Guadagnoli ran for 23 yards and a first-down at the Pace 20, he connected with Kiley from the nine for the Falcons' first score of 2012.

Bentley dominated the second quarter, amassing 245 yards on only 16 plays while scoring three times to open a commanding 28-0 lead. Senior running back Bobby Tarr (Byfield/Bishop Fenwick HS) took it in from the two to finish a quick six-play, 92-yard drive that featured a 33-yard run by Tarr and a 32-yard pass from Guadagnoli to Kiley.

After a 22-yard punt return by junior Lorenzo Warren (Boston/Catholic Memorial HS) gave Bentley the ball in Pace territory, it took only three plays for the Falcons to score again. This time, Zahradka and Hill teamed up on a 44-yarder, with Hill taking it down the right sideline about 30 yards after the catch.

Zahradka went deep on Bentley's next possession, pairing with Kiley on a 40-yard pass with the ball in the air for most of that distance.

Bentley added to its lead with single touchdowns in each of the final two quarters. Hill caught a 33-yarder from Guadagnoli with 2:38 left in the third and sophomore transfer Tyler Coppola (North Reading/St. John's Prep) closed out the scoring with a 10-yard run midway through the fourth.

Guadagnoli finished nine of 14 with 203 yards passing and 226 yards total offense. Zahradka threw for 103 yards as he completed three of six aerials, and Tarr led the Falcon ground game with 95 yards on 13 carries. That boosted him to ninth on Bentley's all-time varsity rushing list with 1,704 yards.

The Bentley defense featured eight tackles apiece by senior safety Steve Hopkins (Waltham/ Waltham HS) and junior linebacker Blaine Hopwood (New Bedford/New Bedford HS), with the latter also recording a sack and a pass break-up. Hopwood also contributed on special teams, averaging 44 yards on two punts and running for 23 yards on a fake punt.

The Falcons had a total of six sacks, including two from senior defensive end Matt Campo (Dedham/Catholic Memorial HS). Meanwhile, the Bentley offensive line didn't allow any sacks while helping the running backs average nearly six yards per rush.

Junior Jordan Raynor (Browns Mills, N.J.) had a solid day throwing the ball for Pace, finishing 21 of 37 for 204 yards and no interceptions. Ole Miss transfer Matt Tarpley (Caruthersville, Mo.) was his favorite target, with seven catches for 92 yards.

Bentley will be on the road next Saturday for a 12 noon non-conference encounter at West Virginia Wesleyan.
