4-Run 8th Inning Lifts Bentley to 6-2 Win over Bridgeport

TAMPA, Fla. – Junior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single to right in the eighth and junior catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers/BB&N) added a two-run single later in the frame as Bentley University won for the third time in four days, 6-2 over the University of Bridgeport in non-conference college baseball Thursday afternoon at the University of Tampa Baseball Field.

The late offense supported the relief pitching of junior right-hander Will Rossiter (Granite Springs, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic HS), who struck out six in a three-and-two thirds no-hit innings.

Sophomore shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) led off the eighth with a single through the left side and advanced 90 feet on a balk. With two outs, Halloran on third and graduate second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) on first after a walk, Figueira gave the Falcons the lead.

The inning continued as senior designated hitter Austin Farry (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) reached on an error to load the bases, setting the table for Butler. He singled up the middle to drive in both Figueira and Samko. Senior Gino Fordiani (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) followed with a single to center, plating Farry with the Falcons' fourth run of the eighth.

Bentley took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Fordiani and a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS).

Bridgeport (1-11) battled back with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth before Rossiter came in to retire all 14 batters he faced.

Bentley's nine hits included two apiece from Figueira, Butler and Fordiani.

Bentley, 3-11, is scheduled to play its home opener Tuesday against American International.
