ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The first nine batters that the University of Bridgeport sent to the plate in the sixth inning all reached and scored, powering the Purple Knights to a 17-3 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Lake Brantley High School.

Eleven different Purple Knights had at least one hit and one run in a game that turned around drastically after the two teams completed the first five innings even at 1-1. Bridgeport, 3-15, totaled 17 hits with four home runs and 32 total bases.

The top of the sixth included a two-run double by senior right fielder Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.), a two-run homer by graduate DH Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.) and three-run homer by senior first baseman Mark Komaromi (Bridgeport, Conn.).

The power for the Purple Knights continued during a six-run ninth that featured a grand slam from  junior pinch-hitter Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.).

Torres, who had a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, matched Carherina's four RBI with a 2-for-6 day.

Bentley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS). Troiani and senior second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) also had RBI singles for the Falcons in the ninth.

Troiani finished with three hits, raising his average to .397, and Samko (.415 with a nine-game hitting streak) was 2-for-5 for the Falcons.

Junior Daniel Riley (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Bros.) gave Bentley five quality innings of pitching before giving up the first three runs in the sixth. He struck out a career-high eight while allowing two hits and three walks.

Sophomore righty Jason Burger (Orlando, Fla.) earned the win for Bridgeport after giving up eight hits and one run in six innings of work. He didn't issue a walk and struck out five.

Bentley completed the Florida portion of its schedule at 6-9 after splitting the four-game series with the Purple Knights.

The Falcons are slated to begin their northern schedule next Sunday with a road doubleheader against American International.
