Assumption Pulls Out 11-10 Win over Bentley in 14; Farry Drives in 4 for Falcons

WORCESTER, Mass. – After rallying from a 9-4 deficit, the Bentley University Falcons gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the 14th inning and dropped an 11-10 decision to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Saturday afternoon at Rocheleau Field. It was Bentley's ninth one-run loss of the season.

Sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/Watertown HS) was involved in six of the Falcons' 10 runs as he finished the day 3-for-6 with four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Bentley also received three RBI from freshman catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers/BB&N)).

In the 14th, Assumption (16-25, 7-13 Northeast) loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter.  A ground ball to first by sophomore left fielder Trevor McQuade (Westwood) was misplayed, allowing sophomore shortstop Hunter Traili (Berlin, Conn.) to score the walk-off run.

Bentley, down five with two innings to play, began its comeback in the eighth. Farry had an RBI double to left and a sacrifice fly by Butler scored junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus/ Governor's Academy).

In the ninth, the Falcons opened the inning with singles by senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) and junior DH Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS). A single through the left side by freshman second baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/ East Bridgewater HS) brought in Ashworth and made it a two-run game.

Following a walk and a strikeout, back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Bocchino and Ferry evened the game at 9-9.

Bentley took a 10-9 lead in the top of the tenth as Ashworth scored on a two-out single up the middle by freshman first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS).

Assumption, which scored the winning run in the 14th without benefit of a hit, did the same in the tenth to tie the contest and sent it to the 11th. After two hit batters and a sacrifice bunt put two in scoring position, junior DH Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy) scored the equalizer on a grounder to short.

Farry's three hits were matched by Ashworth and the Falcons (14 hits) also received two apiece from Berardino and Butler.  Assumption totaled 15 hits with eight of those coming from the bottom third of the order.

Bentley relievers David Riley (Mansfield/Xaverian Bros. HS) and Daniel Rivera (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore HS) combined for 6.1 innings of one-hit pitching with each giving up just one run. Sophomore righty Mike Keinz (North Branford, Conn.) earned the win for the Hounds following 5.2 innings of quality relief (two hits, one run, six strikeouts).

The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series and wrap up the regular season Sunday at 1 pm at Assumption. Bentley (11-28, 9-11 Northeast) will also play at Southern New Hampshire Tuesday evening in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Championships.
