WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior shortstop Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y) stole home with two outs in the bottom of the 13th to give the University of New Haven a 2-1 game-two win and a sweep of its Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with Bentley University Saturday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The score in the opener was 5-0.
Walraven led off what proved to be the final inning with a full-count bases-loaded single to right center. He stole second and advanced to third on a grounder to short before racing home with the game-winner.
That was the first run for either team since the first inning. Bentley got on the board first as freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) led off with a walk and eventually scored on a grounder to short by sophomore first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS).
New Haven (7-2, 2-0 NE10) countered in the bottom of the inning, senior left fielder Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn.) scoring an unearned run after reaching on a two-out single.
Bentley (2-15, 0-2 NE10) threatened several times over the final 12 innings but was unable to punch a second run across. The Falcons had two in scoring position with two outs in the second, runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth, the same situation with one out in the ninth, and a runner on second with two outs in the tenth.
Bentley received quality pitching from both senior Jack Burke (Reading, Mass./St. John's Prep) and sophomore Luke Dawson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS), a pair of right-handers. Burke allowed five hits and one unearned run while striking out seven in 7.1 innings. Dawson, in 5.1 innings of relief, yielded three hits and struck out four.
Bentley's seven hits included two from senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Reg. HS). Freshman third baseman Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y.) had three of New Haven's eight hits in the contest.
In game one, junior right-hander David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y.) and a pair of relievers combined on a six-hitter for the Chargers, who broke open a close one with four runs in the sixth. Palmer, in his seven innings of action, scattered five hits and fanned eight.
New Haven's sixth inning featured a two-run single to left by senior third baseman Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y.).
Bentley's six hits included a single and double from Grover.
Bentley is scheduled to open its NE10 Northeast Division schedule Wednesday at Merrimack College, field conditions permitting.
