Bridgeport Pulls Away for 11-4 Win over Bentley

TAMPA, Fla. – Everyone in the Bentley University lineup had at least one hit, but nine different Purple Knights scored a run as the University of Bridgeport pulled away late for an 11-4 win over the Falcons in non-conference college baseball at the University of Tampa's UT Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Bridgeport (5-7) broke the game open in the eighth, scoring four times to make it a 10-4 lead over the Falcons. Junior right fielder Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) had a two-run double, the third run scored on an error and the inning also included an RBI double from graduate DH Zach Burger (Orlando, Fla.).

That was the third big inning for Bridgeport, which had opened the game's scoring with three runs in the third and made it 6-2 with another three-run inning in the sixth.

Torres led Bridgeport with three RBI while senior center fielder Tyler Gambardella (West Haven. Conn.) finished four-for-four with two runs scored. Junior righty Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y.) earned the save with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in which he struck out four.

Senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) and freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) both had two hits for Bentley, and sophomore first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) drove in three with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.

Bentley, which completed the Florida portion of its schedule with a 2-13, is scheduled to make its northern debut this coming weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at New Haven sandwiched around single games at Southern Connecticut State Friday and Sunday.
