RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore catcher Steven Octave (New Windsor, N.Y.) hit a grand slam in the opener and junior third baseman Jay Jabs (Schwenksville, Pa.) did the same in game two as Franklin Pierce University, the third-ranked team in Division II, swept Bentley University, 19-2 and 8-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Saturday afternoon at Pappas Field.

Jabs finished the doubleheader with four  hits, two homers, 11 total bases and nine RBI with Franklin Pierce improving to 30-4 overall and 8-1 NE-10 Northeast. Bentley dropped to 9-19 overall and 1-9 in division play.

In the opener, the Ravens turned 13 hits (six for extra bases), 11 walks and three hit batters into 19 runs. They scored in six different innings, including six in both the third and eighth frames.

Senior shortstop Justin Brock (Latham, N.Y.), Octave and Jabs combined for 11 RBI in the first game. Brock was three-for-four with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI, Jabs drove in three runs  with a bases-loaded double and Octave has his first home run of the season in the eighth.

Sophomore righty Anthony Matarazzo (Medford, Mass.) pitched the first six innings for the Ravens and improved to 7-0 after allowing five hits and two runs.

Bentley's runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. Graduate student and first baseman Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport HS) led off the fourth with a single up the middle, took second on a ground out and scored on a ground-rule double down the left field line by junior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS).

In the fifth, freshman left fielder Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS) doubled to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Zachary Littman (Abington, Mass./ Abington HS).

Bentley finished with ten hits with O'Connor (3-for-5) the only Falcon with more than one.

Game two for the Ravens featured a grand slam by Jabs in the fifth as he turned a 1-0 game into a 5-0 contest. He also went deep in the seventh, his ninth round-tripper of the season.

Sophomore righty John  Amendola (Wallingford, Conn.), 4-1 on the season. posted the complete game  five-hit shutout, striking out six while walking one.  Bentley's best scoring opportunities came in the first two innings but in both cases, Amendola stranded runners on second and third.

Graduate student Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) and sophomore DH Nick Neshe (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS) each had two hits for Bentley.

The two teams will complete their three-game weekend series Sunday at 1 pm at Franklin Pierce.
