Stonehill Tops Bentley, 4-1; Rocha with 2 Hits for Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior second baseman Chris Hoyt (Walpole) had two hits and two strikeouts, and sophomore righty Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield) pitched six shutout innings, as Stonehill College topped Bentley University, 4-1, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Wednesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

Stonehill grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Junior center fielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Conn.) led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on a two-out single up the middle by junior shortstop Steve Lee (Braintree).

The Skyhawks extended their advantage to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Hoyt drove in both with a two-out double to left with sophomore  catcher Alexander Joyce (Newton) coming in from third and sophomore third baseman Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn) from first. Joyce had doubled earlier in the inning and Nunez drew a walk to set the table for Hoyt.

Senior catcher Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) doubled and scored Bentley's only run of the game in the ninth. After the two-bagger to right for his second hit of the game, he took third on a passed ball and scored on an infield error.

Klingensmith, 2-0 on the season, scattered five hits in his six innings of work before giving way to the bullpen. Senior righty Mike Krupczak (Springfield) pitched the seventh and eighth, and junior righty Aubrey Solomon (Groton) came on for the ninth.

Senior righty Will Alden (Westford/Westford Academy) went the distance for Bentley. He struck out six while allowing nine hits and three walks.

Hoyt and senior right fielder Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif.) each had two hits for Stonehill (15-11, 1-4 NE-10 Northeast).

Bentley (9-17, 1-6 Northeast) will play a three-game series at nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce this weekend, beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
