Assumption Blanks Bentley, 6-0; Neshe with 2 Hits for Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore right-hander Mike Curtis (Wilmington) blanked the Falcons over seven innings and his teammates supported him with 11 hits as Assumption College shut out Bentley University, 6-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Friday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Bentley, which had won two of its previous three, dropped to 7-15 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast Division. Assumption (10-13) snapped a three-game slide and improved to 4-1 in divisional play.

Assumption grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first when the Hounds strung together three straight singles to left. The third one, off the bat of junior first baseman Jake Byrne (Grafton), drove in junior third baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury). The throw to the plate got away, allowing sophomore left fielder Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy) to score an unearned run.

It stayed that way until the seventh when the Greyhounds picked up three runs. Senior center fielder Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn.) had an RBI single and senior catcher Tom Paine (Upton) followed with a two-run single. Another RBI single by Panza in the eighth completed the game's scoring.

Curtis, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth, yielded three hits and three walks while striking out six and lowering his ERA to 1.80. Freshman righty Colton King (Westerly, R.I.) pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits.

Bentley's best scoring opportunities came in the second (first two runners reached) and seventh (bases loaded with one out), but the Falcons were stymied by Curtis in both innings.

Junior DH Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS), who raised his team-leading average to .343, had two hits for Bentley, including a broken bat single to left for the Falcons' first hit of the afternoon.

Assumption's 11 hits included three by Coggeshall.

Bentley will remain at home to host American International in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
