Freshmen Power Bentley to Game 2 Win after Assumption Rallies in Game 1

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshmen Mike Samko (Arlington/Arlington Catholic HS) and Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS) combined for six hits, five runs scored and ten RBI as Bentley University bounced back from a game one loss to top Assumption College 15-6 in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Rocheleau Field.

Both drove in five runs with Samko, a third baseman, 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Neshe, a left fielder, 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Samko hit his first career home run and Neshe had a pair of doubles.

In the opener, Assumption rallied from a 7-2 deficit after three-and-a-half innings to prevail 8-7. Spoiled with the loss were a pair of two-run homers Falcon by senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS). He now has six round trippers in 18 games this season.

Nagy's homers came at two different fields and 17 days apart as the game was started at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro back on Mar. 26 but suspended due to weather conditions after one inning with the Falcons up 2-0.

After play resumed, Bentley added to its lead with five runs over the next three innings. Senior DH Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport/Newburyport HS) tripled and scored in the second, Nagy cleared the center field fence in the third to make it 5-2 and sophomore second baseman Burton Deady (Andover/ Andover HS) hit a two-run triple in the fourth.

The Greyhounds battled back with one run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to draw within two, 7-5. In the sixth, after a hit batter and a single, sophomore third baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury) hit a three-run blast to right.

Meanwhile, senior Zack LaRosa (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I.), a pair of right-handers, combined to retire 15 of the final 18 Bentley batters to step to the plate.

In addition to Nagy, Bentley received two hits from junior shortstop Zachary Littman (Abington/ Abington HS) who has reached base in all 18 games this season.

Game two saw the Falcons (5-13, 3-3 NE-10 Northeast) vault out to a 5-0 lead with single runs in the second and third, and three more in the fourth. Samko had an RBI single in the second, Deady produced a sacrifice fly in the third and Samko had a two-run homer to right in the fourth.

After the Greyhounds (8-16, 4-5) picked up a couple runs, Bentley answered with two runs on the six, the second scoring on a Neshe sacrifice fly. An inning later, Nagy doubled and scored on a single to center by Samko.

Following a four-run seventh by Assumption that reduced the lead to two at 8-6, Bentley broke the game open with seven in the eighth. Nagy drew a bases-loaded walk, Samko had an RBI single, two other runs scored on ground balls and Neshe delivered a three-run double.

Bentley totaled 12 hits with Nagy and O'Connor both having two along with two runs scored. Senior right-hander Bill Sullivan (Carver/Carver HS), who pitched into the seventh, earned his second win of the spring and junior righty Will Alden (Westford/Westford Academy) provided 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Bentley will be back at home Monday afternoon with a 3:30 game against Stonehill, a game originally scheduled for Mar. 25.
