Rollins Rides 4-Hit Pitching to a 7-1 Win over Bentley
WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior right-hander Matt Hendricks (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and a pair of relievers combined on a four-hitter as Rollins College took the first of a three-game series with Bentley University, 7-1, in non-conference college baseball Friday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
Hendricks pitched the first seven, allowing three hits and one run while striking out four. Adam Ogburn (Panama City, Fla.), another senior righty, got the first two outs in the eighth and senior lefty Seth Brenner (Marietta, Ga.) came on for the final four outs.
Rollins, on top 1-0 after picking up an unearned run in the second, put three more on the scoreboard in the third. After a single, walk and fly ball put runners on the corners, sophomore third baseman Philip Burket (Winter Garden, Fla.) made it 2-0 with a single up the middle. The Tars picked up the next two without a hit, runners scoring on a grounder back to the mound and an error.
After Rollins (3-4) picked up single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Bentley scored its only run of the contest in the seventh. Senior center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) led off with a double to right, moved over 90 feet on a grounder to short and after a walk, scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of grad student Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS).
Junior catcher Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth HS), elevated into the lead-off spot in Coach Bob DeFelice's lineup, delivered with a pair of singles for the Falcons.
Rollins' nine hits included two apiece by junior second baseman Carlos Garmendia (Miami, Fla.), including a lead-off homer in the fifth, and Burket. Both players had two RBIs as well.
Senior righty Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS North) started and took the loss for the 0-4 Falcons. He pitched four innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs.
The two teams will continue the series at 2 pm Saturday afternoon.
