Bentley Suffers 3rd One-Run Loss of the Week Despite 5 Hits by Keady

WALTHAM, Mass. – Despite 17 hits, including five by senior left fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/ Norwood HS), Bentley University dropped an 8-7 decision to Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The team's third-one run loss in their last five games dropped Bentley to 22-16 overall and 13-7 in the Northeast. While a win would have put the Falcons in a three-way tie for first in the division with one to play, the loss dropped them into a tie for third.

A quartet of Assumption relievers blanked Bentley over the final four innings after the Falcons had overcome an early 4-0 deficit to take a 7-5 lead. The Greyhounds regained the advantage with a three-run seventh inning,

A one-out double to right by junior left fielder Billy Johnson (Auburn) ignited the Assumption rally in the seventh. Junior DH Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge) drew a walk and freshman first baseman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury) singled to left center to score Johnson and bring the visitors within one. Following a wild pitch, a ground out brought in O'Donnell from third with the tying run and a single up the middle by sophomore catcher Tom Paine (Upton) plated Coggeshall with the go-ahead run.

Bentley threatened over the next three innings, but stranded runners on the corners in the seventh, left the bases loaded in the eighth and saw the game end with the potential tying run on second.  The Falcons faced a different reliever in each of those innings and managed just one unearned run in five innings against the Greyhound bullpen.

After Assumption scored four in the top of the first, Bentley answered back with two in the bottom half of the inning. Keady and freshman second baseman Burton Deady (Andover/Andover HS) led off with back-to-back triples and Deady scored on a grounder to first.

Each team scored a run in the second and Bentley jumped on top with three runs in the fourth. Deady had an RBI single, senior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) followed with a sacrifice fly and senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS) made it a 6-5 game with an RBI single.

An RBI single by Keady in the fifth made it a 6-5 game. His second game of the season with at least five hits gave him 219 for his career, moving him past Don Peters '97 and Charlie Pagliarulo '10 into third on Bentley's all-time list.

Bentley also received three hits from Nagy and two apiece from Deady (who extended his hitting streak to 13), junior center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater/Xaverian Bros. HS), senior DH Dante Padovani (Lynnfield/Lynnfield HS) and freshman first baseman Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./ Amity Regional HS).

Senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester), who pitched the ninth for his second save of the series and seventh of the season, had three of Assumption's 12 hits and senior third baseman Michael Smith (Old Lyme, Conn.) had three RBI for the Hounds, who finished their season at 19-20 (10-11 NE-10).

Bentley will finish the regular season at Northeast Division co-leader Franklin Pierce Monday at 3:30 pm and will play a first-round game in the conference championships Wednesday.
