Bentley Rallies Late for 5-3 Win over Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons, down 3-1 after seven, scored four times over the final two innings, including three in the ninth, to claim a 5-3 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional baseball Wednesday afternoon at Rocheleau Field. The win was the ninth in the last ten games and 11th in the last 13 for the Falcons.

The ninth inning rally for the Falcons, who had been 0-12 this year when trailing after eight, began with a one-out full-count walk to left fielder Dante Padovani (Lynnfield/Lynnfield HS), the fourth time in the game the junior reached base (two hits, two walks).

Junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) followed with his third hit of the afternoon, with Padovani moving up 90 feet. Freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/ Dighton-Rehoboth HS) singled through the left side, driving in Padovani with the tying run. An RBI single to right center by senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) scored Keady, putting Bentley back in front, 4-3. Following an error on the play that allowed Mondor to reach third, junior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS) gave the Falcons insurance with a sacrifice fly.

Bentley's comeback began an inning earlier. Gillis led off with a single to left, Nagy was hit by a pitch and after a double play, junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) singled to center to drive in Gillis. His only hit of the day also stretched his hitting streak to 15 games. Earlier in the game, Bentley senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) kept his streak alive by hitting in his 16th straight.

Bentley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the fourth time in the last five games coach Bob DeFelice's lead has scored in its first at bat. Keady led off the game with a single to left, stole both second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gillis.

Sophomore lefty Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport/Newburyport HS) retired the first ten Assumption batters he faced and limited the Hounds (11-22, 7-11 NE-10) to one hit through five. He ran into trouble in the sixth, giving up three runs (only one earned) on three hits and an error. The big blow was a two-run double by sophomore first baseman Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge) that turned a tie game into a 3-1 Bentley deficit.

Sophomore righty Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North HS) pitched the final three innings for the Falcons and picked up his third relief win of the year. After giving up a single to the first batter he faced, he retired the final eight, including a double play to erase the only runner. O'Connor struck out four and Root two, and neither issued a walk.

Bentley (18-15, 11-7 NE-10) outhit the home team 10-5, including three by Keady and two apiece from Gillis and Padovani.

Despite playing a non-divisional game, Bentley moved into a tie for second in the NE-10 Northeast Division as St. Michael's upended first-place Southern New Hampshire, 8-2. The Falcons will see SNHU three times this weekend, beginning with a 3:30 encounter at Penmen Field on Friday.
