Yohe Pitches Six-Hitter as Bentley Takes Rubber Game from #19 Franklin Pierce, 5-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior right-hander John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) scattered six hits, none coming with runners on base, as Bentley University knocked off nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University, 5-1, in the rubber game of a three-game Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division series Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The victory was the Falcons' third of the year over a team in the Division II top 25, as well as Bentley's ninth in the last 11 games. Coach Bob DeFelice's team opened the season with a 5-3 win over then-number four Tampa, and took the first game of the series with number 19 Franklin Pierce on Saturday, 6-0.

Yohe's 14th career complete game included two walks and four strikeouts. The Ravens had the leadoff man on five times, but were 0-for-17 with runners on base, including 0-for-11 with a runner in scoring position.

Bentley's first three runs, two coming in the first and one in the second, were scored without benefit of a base hit as the Falcons capitalized on Franklin Pierce

A dropped pop-up to start the bottom of the first enabled junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) to reach second. Walks to freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/ Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) and senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) loaded the bases, and a wild pitch brought Keady in from third with the first run. Following two walks and an intentional walk, junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) drew a bases loaded walk, forcing in Mondor for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Mondor was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second and scored on an error.

Franklin Pierce's only run of the game came in the third. Junior first baseman Zach Mathieu (Derry, N.H.) walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder John Razzino (Cranston, R.I.).

Bentley answered by scoring twice in the bottom half of the fourth. Freshman DH Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) led off with a single up the middle, advanced on a bloop single to center by Keady and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Gillis. Gillis got caught in a rundown between first and second, and before he could be tagged out, Keady scored the Falcons' fifth run.

Bentley's seven hits included two by Rocha and one apiece by senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) and junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS), each of whom kept a hitting streak alive. Korwek has now hit in 14 straight and Brennan's streak was extended to 13.

Bentley, with the series win, improved to 16-15 overall, 9-7 NE-10 and 5-3 in the division. Franklin Pierce, which had won                 12 of 13 coming into the weekend, dropped to 23-12 overall, 13-3 NE-10 and 6-3 in the division.

Bentley's next five games are on the road, beginning Tuesday at Merrimack.
