Despite Quality Pitching, Bentley’s 3-Game Win Streak Snapped by Bridgeport, 2-1

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Bentley University senior right-handers John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./ Merrick HS) and Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) combined to allow eight hits and two runs, but University of Bridgeport sophomore lefty Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) turned in a complete game six-hitter as the Purple Knights edged the Falcons, 2-1, in non-conference college baseball at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium Thursday afternoon.
The Bentley bats, which had erupted for 26 runs and 30 hits in the first two games of the series, were quieted by O'Keefe. Five of the six hits were singles, and O'Keefe finished with 10 strikeouts and only one walk.
Bentley, which stranded seven runners on base over the first six innings, had the bases loaded with one out in the second, but O'Keefe left them there with a strikeout and a foul out.
Bridgeport, 3-6, scored its first run of the afternoon in the fourth. Junior shortstop John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) hit a one-out single to right, advanced to second on a walk and scored on a double down the left field line by sophomore catcher Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.).
The Purple Knights picked up another run in the sixth and again Ascenzia ignited the rally with a single to right. After a strikeout and a single by Bickford, junior right fielder Michael James (Piscataway, N.J.) drove him in with a single to right.
Bentley's only run of the afternoon came with two out in the top of the seventh. Junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) reached on a throwing error and scored on a single through the left side by freshman DH Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS).
Yohe pitched the first five innings and Rey the final three with each allowing four hits and one run. They combined for eight strikeouts, including five by Yohe.
Bentley, 6-7 after having a three-game winning streak halted, will close out the Florida portion of its season with a two-game series with Pace University at Rollins. The two teams will play Friday at 6 pm and Saturday morning at 11.
