Despite 4 Hits by Gillis, Bentley Falls to No. 4 Tampa in Series Finale

TAMPA, Fla. – Bentley senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) recorded his second career four-hit game, but the University of Tampa, ranked fourth nationally in Division II, had five multi-run innings as it captured the rubber game of the season-opening three-game series,  13-0, in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at the UT Baseball Field.

A quartet of Spartan pitchers combined to blank the Falcons for the second straight day, with senior right-hander and starter Ben Brown (Winter Haven, Fla.) credited with the win following four innings of four-hit pitching.

Gillis, who hit .500 in the series, singled up the middle in the first and ninth innings, singled to left center in the fourth and led off the seventh with a single to right center.

Bentley's best scoring opportunities came in the fourth and seventh innings, both of which started with the Falcons getting the first two runners on. A double play and a fly out got Tampa out of trouble in the fourth, and a pop-up and two strikeouts in the seventh kept the Falcons off the scoreboard.

Tampa got off to a 6-0 start with two runs in each of the first three innings. Sophomore DH Stephen Dezzi (Sarasota, Fla.) had a two-run single in the first, junior first baseman Michael Danner (Tampa, Fla.) drove in two with a second-inning triple, and the third inning included a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Zach Gawrych (Tampa, Fla.) and an RBI single by junior left fielder Drew Doty (Tampa, Fla.).

A two-run homer by pinch-hitter Quinn Pippin (St. Petersburg, Fla.)  made it an 8-0 game in the seventh, and Tampa added a single run in the seventh and four more in the eighth .

Junior center fielder Connor Obrochta (Gulfport, Fla.) scored three times for the Spartans, and six different players had two RBI. Tampa finished with a 17-6 advantage in hits, with seven having at least two.

Bentley, 1-2, will be back in Florida Feb. 16-18 for a three-game set at Rollins College.
