LIU Post Comes From Behind to Sweep Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – After trailing 19-13 in the third set, LIU Post rallied to complete a three-set sweep of Bentley University in non-conference women's volleyball and record its 16th win in its last 17 matches Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center. Scores were 25-14, 25-22, 25-23.

The Pioneers, now 24-4 on the season, were led by Canisius transfer Kristin Bendy (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and senior Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Bendy hit a sensational .571 with 12 kills and no errors in 21 swings, and Valenza put down a match-high 14 kills.

After LIU Post used a 15-4 kill advantage to take the opening set in convincing fashion, the next two sets could have gone either way.

There were 10 ties, five lead changes and a four-point Bentley lead before the Pioneers closed with a 15-8 spurt, including 4-1 after the two squads were even at 21-all. Bendy was a force in the set with six kills in ten attacks.

In the third, Bentley (16-7) used an 11-5 run to open a 19-13 lead. However, six kills, including four by Valenza, during a 9-3 spurt forged a 22-22 tie. It was also tied at 23 before LIU Post finished the match with kills by sophomore Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and junior Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio).

Sophomore Dani Milner (Plano, Texas/The Greenhill School) led Bentley with ten kills and eight digs, and classmate Rachel Bruno (San Diego, Calif./Frances Parker School) hit .312 with six kills. Bruno also provided four blocks and a pair of aces. Senior libero Celia Cristofoli (Fort Collins, Colo./Hudson (Ohio) HS) made 15 digs for the Falcons.

LIU Post nearly doubled Bentley in kills, 49-25, and hitting percentage, .215-113, and totaled 21 more digs, 71-50.

Bentley will be in New York next week with matches at Le Moyne Friday night and Saint Rose Saturday.
