Franklin Pierce Takes 1st 2 Sets, Holds on for 3-1 Win over Bentley

RINDGE, N.H. – A late comeback bid by Bentley University came up short and the Falcons fell to Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse.

After dropping the first two sets (25-22, 25-17), Bentley battled back to take the third, 25-20, as senior setter Allie Rotkin (Cumming, Ga./Milton HS) had 11 assists, a kill and a block in the set.

The visiting Falcons struggled for much of the fourth, but closed to within a single point, twice, 22-21 and 23-22. Any hopes of forcing a fifth set were dashed by a kill and a block by Raven sophomore middle hitter Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.) for the match's final two points.

Sonuga led Franklin Pierce (7-13, 3-5 NE-10) with 15 kills, a .538 hitting percentage and five blocks. Sophomore Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) followed with a 12-kill, 13-dig double-double and junior setter Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) totaled 48 assists.

For Bentley, both senior Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) and junior Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) had 12 kills. Rotkin finished with 21 assists and three blocks in the two sets she played.

Franklin Pierce outhit the Falcons .228-.135 and had a 5-2 advantage in service aces.

Bentley will return home for matches this weekend against Saint Rose Friday and Le Moyne Saturday.
