Bentley Falls to Adelphi in 3 Despite Double-Double by Van Buren

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Despite a double-double from senior co-captain Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) in her return to her native Long Island, Bentley University was swept by Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Friday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport. Match scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.

Van Buren, playing only about 15 miles from her hometown, hit .290 with 12 kills and 11 digs. Her teammates didn't have as much success, combining for 11 kills and 17 attack errors, as Bentley was limited to an .028 hitting percentage.

After dropping the opening set, Bentley gave the home team a battle in the next two. The Falcons had a 21-19 lead in the second and were even at 22 in the third.

However, both times the Panthers finished strong. They ran off six unanswered to go up 2-0 in the match with four of the six points coming on Bentley attack errors. Adelphi put the match away in the third with a kill by grad student Melissa Rigo (Elwood, N.Y.) breaking the 22 tie and back-to-back kills from senior Amanda Borges (Bayonne, N.J.).

Borges led Adelphi (13-8, 4-3 NE-10) with ten kills and Rigo provided the Panthers with 15 digs, three blocks and seven kills.

Van Buren's 11 digs was matched by junior libero and co-captain Celia Cristofoli (Hudson, Ohio).

Bentley (8-13, 5-2 NE-10) will remain in New York for a 1 pm match at Pace University Saturday afternoon.
