Freshmen Impress but Bentley Drops 2 in Florida to Open Season

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Despite 38 kills and 10 kills from a trio of freshmen, the Bentley University women's volleyball fell in five sets to Lynn University Friday night in its second match of the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational at the NSU Arena. Scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25 and 15-12.

That defeat followed a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 loss to Saint Leo University earlier in the day in the Falcons' 2016 debut.

Against the Lynn Fighting Knights, middle blocker Caitlin Corcoran (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS) led Bentley with 14 kills and four blocks. Rachel Bruno (San Diego, Calif./Frances Parker HS) hit .500 with 12 kills and five blocks, and Dani Milner (Plano, Texas/The Greenhill School) had a 12-kill, 10-dig double-double.

After dropping the second and third sets, Bentley stormed back to take the fourth, using a 13-4 run to prevail 25-19.

In the decisive fifth, the Knights broke an 8-8 tie with five unanswered and put the match away with the 24th kill of the match by senior middle Lydia West (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). She hit .463 with only five errors in 41 attacks.

Lynn (1-1) also received 20 kills from senior outside Cleuzo Porto (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), 15 kills from junior right side Nicol Colonna (Miami, Fla.), 59 assists from senior setter Marissa Tandron (Jacksonville, Fla.) and seven aces from senior Katie Knight (Orlando, Fla.).

Sophomore setter Krista Campbell (Newtown, Pa./Council Rocks North HS) had 42 assists and 16 digs for Bentley, and junior libero Celia Cristofoli (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) provided 25 digs and three aces.

In the Saint Leo match, senior Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) had a team-high nine kills for the Falcons. Corcoran recorded four blocks and Cristofoli had 14 digs.

The Falcons hit only .136 against the Lions, who were powered by sophomore Hope Lemon (Cedar Park, Texas). She hit .361 with 17 kills, and also served five aces.

The season-opening tournament continues Saturday with Bentley facing 11th-ranked Rockhurst at 11:30 and the host team at 2 pm.
