Mattson & Hurwitz Turn in Record-Breaking Performances at BU Hemery Valentine’s Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) and sophomore Sydney Hurwitz (Newton/Newton North HS) each broke a school record while competing for the Bentley University women's indoor track and field team Saturday in the David Hemery Valentine's Invitational at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.

Breaking her own school record has become a habit for Mattson, who achieved the feat for the seventh time this season. The latest came in the 400 meters where her time of 56.85 seconds bettered the mark she set at the 2018 Northeast-10 Championships by 0.98 seconds.

Mattson finished 29th in a field of 172 and climbed to third in the Northeast-10 Conference performance list. Of the runners who finished in front of her, 27 of 28 were Division I, international or club athletes.

Hurwitz improved on the record in the 60 hurdles she set last month at Brandeis by eight-hundredths of a second as she finished in 9.40 seconds. She was 20th among 57 competitors with her time moving her to ninth on the NE10 list.

Junior Dom Balzora-Rivert (Templeton/Narragansett Reg. HS) posted the second fastest 200 meter time in program history with her 26.26 a new personal best by nearly a half-second. He placed 95th of 223 in the event. She was also 41st of 76 in the 60, posting an 8.15 to take second in her heat

New PR's were achieved by sophomore Abby Caulfield (Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) in the 800 (2:25.98), freshman Kaitlyn Helfer (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) in the 200 (1:02.72) and junior Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Math and Science) in the 200 (1:04.79).

Bentley will be back in action Saturday, competing in the Gordon Kelly Invitational at MIT.
