Mattson Continues to Rewrite Bentley Track Record Book

BOSTON, Mass. – Once again breaking her own school record, Bentley University senior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) qualified for Saturday's finals in the 500 meters during the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center Friday.

Mattson, who has made a change to the record book four times during the season's first five meets, broke her own standard in the 500 for the third time this winter with a 1:16.20. The record was 1:17.19 at the start of the season, was lowered to 1:16.70 at the season-opening UMass-Boston Open and to 1:16.58 during the Joe Donohue Games.

Mattson was one of eight qualifiers for Saturday's finals and one of two non-Division I qualifiers. The top time in the prelims, 1:13.38, was turned in by Emilie Cowan of UMass.

Mattson also finished 11th of 22 in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 11.5 inches.

Bentley was also represented on day one of the New Englands by sophomore Abby Caulfield (Northport, N.Y./Northport HS) and junior Abbie Newman (Hanson/Whitman-Hanson Reg. HS). Caulfield was 29th in the 800 (2:33.05) and Newman was 24th in the 1000 (3:17.04).

The New Englands continue Saturday with eight Falcon student-athletes scheduled to compete.
