6 Seniors to Serve as 2018-19 Bentley Track & Field Captains

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University track and field teams, who open the season Saturday with the UMass-Boston Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center, will have a half-dozen seniors serving as team captains.

Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) and Tina Touri (Watertown/Watertown HS) will be charged with leading the women's team while the men's captains will be Michael Carpino (Mansfield/Mansfield HS), Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS), Dan Hergott (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier HS) and Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS).

Mattson, a multi-time All-New England honoree, owns 13 school records, including the indoor standards at each distance from 60 to 600 meters. During her junior year, she was second in the 400 at the outdoor Northeast-10 championships as well as second in the long jump and fourth in the 400 at the NE10 indoors.

Touri, who was also a team captain in cross country, owns indoor best times of 2:26.66 in the 800 and 5:27.72 in the mile. Last February at the indoor NE10s, she was 14th in the 800 and part of the Falcons' 4x800 relay team that placed eighth.

Carpino was 18th in the shot put at the indoor conference championships last year. His career indoor best in the event is 40'6.25", achieved during the 2017 John Thomas Terrier Invitational at Boston University.

Gettings, a sprinter and hurdler, was sixth in the 400 hurdles at the outdoor NE10s and 13th in the 400 indoors as well as part of the Falcons' 4x400 relay that placed seventh in both meets. He owns the second fastest 400 hurdle time in program history at 55.16 seconds.

Hergott placed tenth in the 5000 at the NE10s outdoors and was 15th in the 3000 indoors. His indoor bests at 2:39.02 in the 1000, 4:27.83 in the mile and 8:47.85 in the 3,000. In cross country, he was 58th in the NE10 Championships and 69th in the NCAA Division II East Regional.

Murphy's junior season was highlighted by a second-place finish in the outdoor 10K at the conference championships. He was also ninth in the 5,000 indoors. He ran to 19th two weeks ago in the NCAA Division II East Regional cross country championships, earning All-Region honors.

Both Hergott and Murphy were captains of the men's cross country team this past fall.

After competing on Saturday, the Bentley track and field team will be idle until running at Brandeis the second weekend in January.
