Mattson Resumes Assault on Record Book during Day 1 of Northeast-10 Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On April 14 while competing in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, Bentley University junior Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) broke the school records in both the 200 meters and the long jump.

Those standards lasted only 20 days as she improved on both Friday during the opening day of the 2018 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Southern Connecticut State University.

Mattson finished fifth of 22 in the long jump with her distance of 18 feet, 11.5 inches an improvement of three inches over the record set out in San Diego.

In her second event of the day, Mattson qualified for Saturday's finals in the 200 while also lowering the school record 0.15 seconds with a clocking of 25.43. She captured the last of the eight qualifying slots by seven-hundredths of a second.

Finishing tenth for the Falcons were senior Marianne Bartolotta (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) in the 1500 (4:53.45) and freshman Sydney Hurwitz (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) in the 100 meter hurdles (16.11). Hurwitz also improved on her PR in the long jump by 2.25 inches while finishing 16th (17'1.5").

Going back to the 200, sophomores Dom Balzora-Rivert (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Reg. HS) and Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) both climbed on Bentley's all-time lists. Balzora-Rivert (18th place) moved to number six with a 26.26 and Lewis (22nd place) ran a 26.53 for eighth in program history.

In the team standings, Bentley is 10th among 12 teams with four points, all scored by Mattson.

The championships will continue on Saturday.
