Sihvonen & Mattson Earn All-New England Honors

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bentley University's Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) and Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) both earned All-New England honors Friday while competing in the New England Track and Field Championships Friday afternoon at Williams College.

Mattson finished seventh in the long jump, matching her finish at the indoor New Englands in February. The sophomore came within a quarter-of-an-inch of 18 feet and missed out on a top three showing by only 2.75 inches. Among Division II participants, she was second.

In addition, Mattson qualified for Saturday's finals in the 400 meters with a fifth-place finish. Her time of 55.93 seconds improved on her own school record, set last month in San Diego, by 1.15 seconds, and met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. It also put her at number four on this year's Division II East Region performance list.

Sihvonen, a junior, earned All-New England honors for the third straight year in the javelin with his throw of 202 feet, 11 inches good for third among 23 competitors. He finished about six feet back of the winner, Hunter Stokes of Southern Connecticut State.

Freshman Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) strengthened his hold on second on Bentley's all-time list in the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 55.16 seconds, an improvement of 0.52 on his previous best. He finished 16th of 31 overall, including fourth among Division II student-athletes, and elevated him to seventh on the East Region performance list.

Also competing for Bentley on Friday was junior David Hernandez (Tokyo, Japan), who was 14th overall in the long jump, including fifth among Division II competitors, with a distance of 20 feet, 1.75 inches.

The New England Championships continue on Saturday with Mattson in the 400 and triple jump, junior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) and senior Tim Bolick (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) in the 800, and the Falcons competing in both the men's and women's 4x400 relays.
