Mattson Returns Home to Achieve 3 Top 4 Finishes

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Competing in her hometown for the first time as a collegian, Bentley University sophomore Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) turned in a trio of top-four performances during Sunday's Black and Gold Invitational at Bryant Invitational.

Mattson was fourth of 18 in both the 400 meters (1:00.45) and the long jump (17'2.25") with the latter mark fourth best in the Northeast-10 Conference so far this season. She also helped her team to a NE10-best time of 10:05.82 in the 4x800 relay to finish third behind a pair of Division I squads, Bryant and Rhode Island.

That relay also included junior Marianne Bartolotta (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS), freshman Abbie Newman (Hanson, Mass./Hanson-Whitman Reg. HS) and junior Tina Touri (Watertown, Mass./ Watertown HS).

Senior Julia Morena (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto Reg. HS) was first among Division II runners and 11th of 50 overall in the 1500, finishing in 4:51.99. That improved on her previous best by 3.36 seconds, moved her to 11th on Bentley's all-time list and was second best in the conference thus far in 2017.

Bentley also received top ten finishes from sophomore Steph Robinson (Randolph, N.J./ Randolph HS) in the 800 (9th of 16, 2:32.39), Touri in the 800 (10th of 16, 2:32.51, a PR by 6.87 seconds) and Lewis in the 400 (10th of 19, 1:03.65, a PR by 0.42 seconds).

Bentley finished eighth of nine in the team standings with 25 points. Five of the seven in front of the Falcons were Division I programs, including first-place Rhode Island (259).

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the American International Yellow Jacket Invitational.
