Morena, Mattson Run to Victory at Bridgewater in Outdoor Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior Julia Morena (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) and sophomore Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) turned in winning efforts for the Bentley University women's outdoor track team during the outdoor season-opening Bridgewater State Invitational Saturday.

Morena was the first of 51 runners to reach the finish line in the 1,500 meters with her time of 4:55.35 a new personal best by 4.32 seconds. She pulled out the victory by just a hundredth of a second over Assumption freshman Kialeigh Marston.

Mattson had an easier time in capturing the 400, besting Keene State's Katelyn Terry by 0.52 seconds with a time of 59.60. Also in the 400, Bentley freshman Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) was ninth in 1:04.07.

Mattson was also part of the Falcons' 4x400 relay team that placed fourth of eight in 4:20.60. That quartet also included sophomore Abby Forman (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland HS), freshman Kirsten Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) and junior Monica Levy (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun HS).

Bentley also found success in the 800 and the 5,000.  In the former, junior Marianne Bartolotta (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) was fourth of 32 in 2:31.21 and freshman Abbie Newman (Hanson/ Whitman-Hanson Reg. HS) followed in sixth (2:32.46).

Senior Danielle Coskren (North Andover/North Andover HS) took fifth and junior Courtney Loughnane (Canton/Canton HS) was seventh in the 5,000. Coskren finished in 19:28.88 and Loughnane improved on her PR by about four seconds with a 19:35.53.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the Bryant Invitational.
