Mattson Breaks 3 School Records During Northeast-10 Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – It was quite a night for Bentley University's Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) as the Falcon sophomore competed in three events during the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center and set school records in all three.

Mattson's first school record came in the long jump as she placed fourth overall with a distance of 18 feet, 2.25 inches. It improved on her previous best by three-and-a-half inches and surpassed the standard that Kim Overy had owned since 1990 (18'0.754").

Next, Mattson ran to a third-place finish in the 500 meters with her clocking of 1:17.19 scratching the Bentley standard All-America Amy Varsell set in 2011 (1:07.76) from the record books. It also improved on Mattson's previous best by 1.93 seconds.

Mattson's third school record came while placing fifth in the triple jump. With a distance of 36 feet, 7.5 inches, she exceeded the mark Keisha Johnson set in 2013 by 2.5 inches.

Mattson's third in the 500 was matched by senior Julia Morena (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) in the 5000, which she covered in 17:58.60.

Freshman Abbie Newman (Hanson/Whitman-Hanson Reg. HS) finished seventh in the mile with her 5:21.46 a PR by 2.17 seconds and good for 13th on Bentley's all-time list.

Dom Balzora-Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) turned in the tenth best 60-meter time in program history at 8.31 seconds and also achieved a PR in the triple jump while placing ninth (35'2").

Senior_ Katie Burke (Braintree/Braintree HS) scored with an eighth-place finish in the 3,000. Her time of 10:46.64 improved on her previous best by more than 11 seconds.

Bentley totaled 25 points in the meet, finishing ninth among 12 teams.

Next weekend, Bentley will be back at the Reggie Lewis Center for the New England Championships.
