Mattson Breaks School Record in 400 Meters

BOSTON, Mass. – Bentley University sophomore Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield. R.I./Smithfield HS) broke the school record of a former Falcon All-America Friday afternoon while competing in the David Hemery Valentine's Invitational at Boston University.

Mattson posted a time of 58.41 seconds in the 400 meters, bettering the time Amy Varsell achieved in the same meet seven years ago by 0.66 seconds. It was a new personal best by more than two seconds, 2.18 to be exact, and put her at number nine on the Northeast-10 Conference performance list. In the massive meet that includes both collegians and club runners, the New England qualifier was 46th of 159.

Mattson also competed in the triple jump, finishing 31st of 44 with a distance of 34'8.25".

Other Bentley standouts in a meet that saw the team accomplish at least ten PR's were senior Julia Morena (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) and freshman Chantel Lewis (Bronx, N.Y. / Manhattan Center for Science & Math).

Morena won her section in the mile, her time of 5:16.26 shaving 5.63 seconds off her PR and putting her ninth on Bentley's all-time list. Among the 232 competitors in the mile, she cracked the top half at 113th.

Lewis bettered her collegiate best in the 200 by more than a third of a second, finishing in 27.30. That elevated her to tenth place in program history.

Among the other PR's set Friday were freshman Abbie Newman (Hanson/Whitman-Hanson ) Reg. HS) and senior Katie Burke (Braintree/Braintree HS) in the mile. Newman lowered her best by 8.93 seconds with a 5:23.63 and Burke finished in 5:24.71, an improvement of 3.86 seconds over her previous best.

Next Saturday, Bentley will be at the Reggie Lewis Center for the Northeast-10 Championships.
