She's like money in the bank.
That's the best way to describe Bentley University junior middle-distance ace Amy Varsell, who will make her fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division 2 track and field championships when Colorado State-Pueblo hosts the outdoor meet this weekend. Varsell will toe the starting line today at 3 p.m.
Last week, at the 125th New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships at MIT's Steinbrenner Track, Varsell showed fine form in finishing third in the 800 meters while lowering her own school record with a clocking of 2:09.46. That beat her previous best of 2:11.07 at the 2011 NCAA championships.
The Burlington, Conn., native won the 800 and 1,500 double at the Northeast 10 outdoor meet earlier this season and has rewritten the Falcons record book. In addition to owning school marks outdoors for the 400 (57.83), 800 (2:09.46) and 1,500 (4:30.17), Varsell ranks sixth at 200 meters (26.58), and 12th at 100 meters (13.33). The steady progression from sprints to middle-distance appears to have held her in good stead.
