Marrero Closes Out Career at New Englands

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bentley University junior Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) earned All-New England honors with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters and two of his teammates, senior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton HS) and sophomore Eric Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn./West Hartford HS), reached Saturday's finals during Friday's action at the New England Intercollegiate Outdoor Track and Field Championships at MIT's Steinbrenner Stadium.

Maguire posted the highest finish for a member of the Bentley men's team in the outdoor New Englands since Ryan Agnew was fourth in the 5,000 in 2005. He covered the distance in 31:33.18, finishing about 53 seconds off the winning pace set by Amherst's Andrew Erskine.

Senior Tom Witherell (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos HS) just missed scoring as he was ninth in 32:14.32, a new PR by about 22 seconds.

Vatti qualified for the finals in both the 200 and 400 meters. He had the sixth best qualifying time in the 400, 49.35 seconds, and the seventh best in the 200, 21.90. That was a new personal best and moved him to number two in Bentley history in the event.

Kennedy won his heat and was fourth of 28 overall in the preliminaries of the 100 meters, with his time of 10.91 seconds just a shade off the school record. It established a new PR and moved him to second on Bentley's all-time list.

Kennedy also posted a PR in the 200, his time of 22.18 putting him at number four in Falcon annals. He was 11th of 28 overall, missing a trip to the finals by 0.18 seconds.

Junior Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) also competed for the Bentley men's team on Friday. He was 23rd of 29 in the 400 (51.07) and 20th of 24 in the 200 (22.77).

The only member of Bentley's women's team to compete on Friday was senior Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam HS). In her final race as a collegiate, she was 15th of 24 in the 5,000, with a time of 18:34.79.
